This morning at around 8:30am Suffolk Police and Middle Island FD were called to the Washington Memorial Park Cemetery on Canal Rd. in Mount Sinai after a worker was trapped under a large amount of dirt inside of a grave site.
The victim was working to prepare the grave when the collapse trapped him. Specialized units from the Town of Brookhaven Technical Rescue Task Force worked to stabilize the hole but the victim, unfortunately, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Technical rescue teams and Suffolk Police emergency services officers worked for hours to recover the victim’s body from the accident scene. Homicide detectives and crime scene units were called to the scene to conduct an accident investigation.
