Today at approximately 1:11 p.m., the Riverhead Police Department received reports of a motor vehicle accident involving a car that struck a house at 1381 West Main Street in Riverhead.
Upon arrival, responding patrol units located a 1993 Ford Pickup almost completely embedded within the front of the residence at that location and on fire. The occupants of the residence were able to exit the residence with minor injuries. The occupants of the pickup truck were trapped inside the vehicle for a period of time and were extricated from the vehicle with the assistance of personnel from the Riverhead Fire Department and the fire was extinguished.
One of the residents was treated at the scene by personnel from Riverhead volunteer ambulance and transported to Peconinc Bay medical Center with minor injuries. The operator of the vehicle was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for further treatment of what is described as non-life threatening injuries. The passenger of the vehicle was flown to Stonybrook University Medical Center via Suffolk County Police Aviation section for treatment of what was also described as non-life threatening injuries.
An investigation conducted at the scene revealed that the vehicle had been westbound on West Main Street (State Route 25) and left the roadway, hitting an embankment and becoming airborne, striking the front of the residence. At this time, the driver appears to have suffered a medical event, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.
An occupant within the residence had reportedly just exited the kitchen area, which was the main area affected by the collision, just as the vehicle came into contact with the exterior of the house, escaping serious injuries.
