Suffolk County Police early this morning arrested a man for driving while intoxicated after a motor vehicle crash seriously injured a police officer and himself in Yaphank.

A marked Suffolk County Police vehicle was parked in the roadway blocking traffic due to an earlier police investigation at the intersection of William Floyd Parkway and Yaphank Woods Boulevard at approximately 12 a.m.

A police officer was in the roadway handling traffic control when a 1999 Chevrolet pickup truck traveling southbound on William Floyd Parkway struck the rear of a GMC Yukon, then struck the police vehicle. The force of the impact caused the GMC to strike the police officer.

The driver of the Chevrolet, William Petersohn, and the police officer were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition. The driver of the GMC was not injured.

Major Case Unit detectives charged Petersohn, 38, of Mastic, with Driving While Intoxicated. He will be arraigned at a later date.
