A pilot of a twin engine plane was injured after his plane crashed into a Town of Oyster Bay garbage facility on the Nassau Suffolk border in Old Bethpage.
A Nassau Highway Patrol officer, who saw the plane in trouble, was first on scene according to Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder. He assisted the pilot who was trapped in the wreckage. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non life threatening injuries.
The pilot was out of Greenwich, Connecticut according to Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino. Most likely headed to Republic Airport when he lost power and crashed into the lot. Saladino said the man was lucky not to hit the numerous buildings on the site which would have, most likely, ended much worse.
The investigation has been handed over to the Federal Aviation Administration who will determine the cause of the crash.
