Overnight the Freeport Fire Department was called to a mixed occupancy building at 70 Guy Lombardo Ave. after fire was reported in a storefront with apartments above.
Upon arrival units were met with heavy smoke and fire which was followed by an explosion which injured multiple firefighters. Luckily their injuries are not life threatening in nature.
The fire, which appears to have started in Duryea’s Florist spread to the attached stores and living spaces above. Multiple surrounding departments assisted in bringing the fire under control, which took about 2 hours. The Nassau County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, which appears to be accidental.
Of the 5 injured firefighters only 2 were transported for treatment. There were no other injuries.
