North Babylon, NY- A massive police dragnet with K9 units, a helicopter and dozens of police officers was set in place this afternoon in the area of Mohawk Drive just west of Deer Park Avenue.

It all started after a black male, dressed in all red, fled from a First Precinct police officer on foot.  As the male was fleeing into the residential neighborhood the officer reported hearing a gun shot being fired.  It is still unknown if the man was shooting a the officer or accidentally discharged his weapon while jumping fences.

Police swarmed the area with units to shut down the neighborhood, K9 units to assist in the search and the police aviation unit arrived a short time later.  Numerous 9-1-1 calls came in to police reporting a male heading through rear yards and jumping fences.  A report also came in after the male was seen ditching the gun under a pool cover…that gun was later recovered from the bottom of the pool.

After about an hour of searching the police converged on the rear yard of a home on Mohawk near the corner of Parliament Place and located the perp hiding.  He was taken into custody without further incident.

Suffolk Police 1st squad detectives and crime scene section were called to the scene for evidence recovery and to investigate.
