On Saturday at about 1:05 pm Southampton Town Police Department along with New
York State Police Department responded to COUNTY ROAD 51 near the Hampton Hills Golf Course in the hamlet of Northampton for a one car motor vehicle crash.
Officers on scene determined the driver was headed north on County Road 51 towards Riverhead when he lost control of his vehicle and went across the median colliding with a tree on the opposite side of the roadway. The vehicle then went on fire with the occupant still trapped inside. State Police along with a Good Samaritan were able to put out the flames using fire extinguishers. Mastic Ambulance, while passing through the area stopped to render aid to the driver. Riverhead Fire Department along with Flanders Ambulance also responded to the scene.
The driver was extricated from the vehicle by Riverhead FD Heavy Rescue. He was then airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital by a Suffolk County Police Helicopter with what are believed to be serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Southampton Town Detectives are on scene investigating the cause of the crash.
