van fire

At around 6:15pm Suffolk Police and Coram Fire Department were called to the north bound lanes of North Ocean Ave north of Pine Rd. for a motor vehicle accident with a vehicle fire and possible people trapped.

According to the Coram Fire Department Chief a passing Coram Fire Department member was able to pull a male from the burning vehicle but could not gain access to a female trapped inside the vehicle due to the intensity of the fire. There was also an active propane leak from a barbecue tank in the rear of the van which helped the fire quickly engulf the vehicle.

When firefighters arrived they were able to extinguish the fire and located one body inside the van. The other victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment, but is expected to survive.

The roadway was shut down so 6th squad detectives, arson squad, Town of Brookhaven Fire Marshals and crime scene units could conduct an investigation.
